Why does rain fall the way it does?

The rain forms in the clouds, but many times the updraft in the clouds keeps the rain aloft for a time. The drops collide with each other and grow. Eventually weaker updrafts occur or the entire updraft can end, allowing the drops to fall to the surface. Also, most clouds are composed of tiny water droplets, too light to fall to the surface. Other processes must occur for the production of rain, and the strength of these processes varies within the clouds.
